Overview

Despite its small size, Potter’s Wax Museum right from the day of its opening up to the present times continues to attract visitors in droves. This boutique museum is a major historic and cultural landmark in St. Augustine city, housing 160+ wax carvings of American greats. The design and structure of Potter’s Wax are modeled on the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum that opened in London in 1835. As you walk around the museum, you come across carbon copies of highly admired American Presidents George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Abraham Lincoln.

Itinerary

The Potter’s Wax Museum Tour has been meticulously planned for travelers and sightseers with a proclivity for admiring waxy representations of great personalities. Safely ensconced inside the Old Drugstore in the historic quarter of St. Augustine, Potter’s Wax Museum is the nation’s first wax museum, established in 1948. The museum houses and displays wax statues, statuettes, and figurines of renowned individuals from different walks of life and professions.

As you walk inside the museums, you’ll see waxy moulds of statesmen, political leaders, sportspersons, movie stars, and pop idols. Situated on 31 Orange Street, St. Augustine, FL -32084, Potter’s Wax Museum contains wax sculptures of distinguished Americans past and present who’ve made the country proud. If you’ve signed up for the Ghosts & Gravestones Tour, you’ll have a heart-stopping experience when you visit the Chamber of Horrors inside Potter’s Wax.

Your spooky guide, who’ll accompany you throughout the excursion, will show you around the museum, especially the horror movie section.

George L. Potter, who founded the museum, was fascinated when he saw wax replicas of eminent personas in a museum in London during his childhood. Inspired by the waxy reproductions, he started nurturing dreams of creating a similar museum in the US which would be the first of its kind. From 1947 onwards George Potter started collaborating with a recognized London-based wax studio, GEMS for sculpting unique statues for his museum.

Potter left no stone unturned and spared no effort in ensuring that the wax casts would be perfect in all respects. He imported top-quality wax from France and hair from Italy while sculptors were recruited from every corner of Europe. The task of shaping and fashioning the figures and statutes was carried out in Belgium.

Potter threw open the museum to the American public in 1948, and since that year, Potter’s Wax has attracted visitors from near and far in increasing numbers. Presently, Potter’s Wax Museum displays over 145 wax models of prominent US Presidents, scientists, novelists, poets, musicians, politicians, singers, and other illustrious individuals. Go ahead and book your tickets in advance. You will surely save both time and money.
