Located near La Jolla, California, the original course was designed in 1937 by George Thomas, Jr. The course is named after Hollis Brown "Torrey" Pines (1867–1949), a banker and amateur golfer from Los Angeles who served on the original nine-hole members' board of directors.
 
During World War II, Torrey Pines Golf Course became home to an airfield called Camp Callan. When the war ended, it became a permanent active-duty air force base and eventually closed in 1976 for redevelopment as a civilian golf course.
 
The golf course reopened on December 12th, 1977 with 18 holes (and two additional holes were added in 1982).
